Philosophy on Using Games

At first, I was a bit hesitant about using games because, firstly, I received an education where there wasn't much emphasis on technology and we usually did fine without it. I also thought it would be difficult to incorporate something which usually distracts children from learning properly and can make them lose focus of the lesson at hand if they are busy playing games. Technologies such as various computer softwares that help with presentations and tools such as Smartboard are tools that I completely go for , as I've seen how it helps, but with regards to gaming, I am still unsure about where I stand. Yet I have to say, after reading more about this topic and seeing what other teachers have to say on using games, I am trying to think out of the box and realize that kids will play games , no matter what, so perhaps it would be great to incorporate what they enjoy into the classrooms , making them more enthusiastic about learning. I look forward to learning more about all this myself, as I've never really been into gaming and have a lot to learn.

  1. I think one of the reasons you may be unsure is because it is something foreign to you and all of us teachers as well. Anyone who is in this class probably went through school hand writing papers and everything being face to face; the extent of technology in my early schooling was a calculator that was used sparingly. It's not that how we were taught wasn't sufficient, there just were not any other options out there. Now that we have options we have to go outside of what we previously knew which can be scary but this class and others in this program will help us learn and be confident in using these ideas in our lessons.

  2. Well state, "It's not that how we were taught wasn't sufficient, there just were not any other options out there. Now that we have options we have to go outside of what we previously knew which can be scary but this class and others in this program will help us learn and be confident in using these ideas in our lessons."

And thus the purpose of writing this paper to present a framework for teachers to see the educational benefits of gaming from the perspectives of reading, writing, critical thinking/problem solving, and collaborating with others. :)
