  1. I thought your lesson was wonderful and wish I could try out the tag reader! What I really loved was how you incorporated the tool into the learning. This could too easily become a situation where students are left with the tool to work independently (as might happen at home). However, with all of the discussions, character webs/analyses, and cause and effect games you found a way to take an independent activity and make it a whole class learning experience. I'm sure the students loved it and learned a lot too!

  2. Gitel, your implementation is exemplary! The implementation seemed well smoothly and the students were engaged. I would love to see the more discussion on (a) the students' learning outcomes (knowledge and skills, such as the vocabulary and concept regarding cause and effect listed in your lesson plans), (b) how the technology (tag reader) helped or enhanced their learning, and (c) the evaluation of the lesson objectives. Your point on traditional literacy is well stated. New literacy add to a broader set of knowledge and skills to the traditional literacy. It builds on the traditional/conventional literacy. Great job!!! :D

    1. Thank you! The whole lesson took a couple of sessions to complete as I went along with the chapter and review layout. Vocabulary skills was a running theme and I would point out the words throughout the lesson or and reviewed the entire list once we finished the book. Cause and effect was mentioned whenever it came up , and in this case, for example, I asked what caused Mother Hubbard to be frantic and the students would realize the missing mice, etc. We charted all the instances of cause and effect which also helped us solve the case, which was the main idea of the mystery. The Tag reader was very engaging and the students enjoyed the break from traditional learning and the fact that they could pace themselves and read on their own. They also had the ability to clarify things on their ownif it wasn't understood by pressing different symbols in the reader. This was a big help as they moved on without disruption. Evaluation was also conducted throughout implementation and I would take care to notice who participated in group discussion and activities and so on. The quizzes and reviews at the end of the chapter allowed me to see where the students were holding individually. They all performed relatively well and I was very pleased with the overall implementation. Thanks again!

  3. This implementation of a somewhat simple idea is exactly what new literacies are about. The way you have incorporated technology into this but most importantly how you created student interaction throughout the project and made students comfortable to express themselves. Much like Second Life gives students an opportunity to express themselves online this implementation gives students a way to express themselves through technology and discussion as well. Overall excellent job!

  4. I am always impressed whenever I read a lesson plan that focuses on young students building foundational literacy skills. Through the techniques that you describe I am able to implement them into my own teaching as I have students at the 11/12 grade level who are testing at a third grade reading level. The technology you have used is something I used with my own kids when they were little, I am glad to see it has found its way into classrooms.
My own son, as well as many of my current students, are focusing on vocabulary skills in preparation for the SAT course. Their seems to be a lack of Web 2.0 resources geared towards higher level vocab skills that are required by the upper level high stakes college entrance exams.
Great lesson, well laid out and easy to follow. I loved the cause and effect game, which was a great way to assess student outcomes. I also especially liked how you laid out the standards along with what students would do to show mastery. Fabulous!
